New Ground Co-Housing Visit

Thanks to our wonderful hosts at New Ground Co-housing in High Barnet, London.
They were extremely generous with their time and knowledge, guiding us through their experience of co-housing.

It took an enormous amount of self organised work to get themselves to this point, from a building committee to a legacy committee each member plays a valuable role in the community.

Built in 2016, with both social and privately owned units they are still the only Co-housing development serving older women exclusively.
New Ground consists of a mix of 1-3 bed self contained units with shared facilities including a garden, guest house, common room including kitchen and laundry room. They operate an 'door ajar' policy that signals which of the residents is interested in social visits.

We at Islander believe that New Ground is an important case study for future housing models that could be adapted in Ireland. This residency was part of our research for the How We Live project currently underway in Balbriggan.
