DEMOLITION TAKE DOWN

What is more difficult, to demolish an existing building or adapt it for reuse? Is demolition a problem or an opportunity for the construction industry? Who decides when a building is redundant and scheduled for demolition? Demolition Take Down is a research and engagement initiative aimed at revolutionising Ireland's demolition practices.

The Irish construction industry accounts for 6% of the employed population but generates 48% of all waste produced in Ireland. Demolition is part of this business. We seek to uncover the underlying motivations and current challenges behind demolition practices in Ireland.

Our mission is to delve deep into the core causes of demolition. We will consider its impact on value and waste; culturally, financially, and environmentally. Through explorative research and cross-disciplinary conversations, we aim to spark a shift in attitudes and behaviours within the construction industry. Together, we have an opportunity to make a more valuable contribution towards Ireland becoming a more resilient society.

Demolition Take Down welcomes input from architects, contractors, developers, engineers, local authorities, planners, project managers, quantity surveyors, sub-contractors, and technologists. It aims to instigate a shift in practices, fostering alternative approaches that will help minimises waste generation and maximises resource efficiency.

Together, let’s spark an industry wide discussion and pave the way for more sustainable, responsible approaches to demolition in Ireland. Follow us on Instagram here or email us at info@demolitiontakedown.ie
